New Peer Group for LGBTQ Women of Color 50+ at Affinity Community Services
By: Dr. Maria Glover Wallace

Affinity Community Services welcomes their newest peer led group: Midstreamers.

Midstreamers is a new group at Affinity that addresses the unique needs of LGBTQ women of color 50 years of age and older. It is a welcomed addition to the current peer led groups: 40 plus, Trailblazers, Spectrum and Proud Parents.

Midstreamers is an energetic group of women who represent a significant cohort of Affinity’s constituency. Most recently, the group enjoyed a theatre outing in January, attending “Blues for an Alabama Sky” at the Court Theatre in Chicago’s Hyde Park. The event was well attended by members and guests.

This group meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7pm to discuss current issues and topics of interest. There are three co-facilitators and a Board liaison that work with Affinity Executive Director Imani Rupert-Gordon to provide safe space and programming for this growing population of aging Baby Boomers.

The group is currently planning its calendar of events that include game nights, PRIDE potluck, community service projects and more. Co- facilitators Glenda Poindexter, Lisa Scott and Rena Hall encourage women to come and share their talents and interests with the group.

Our next event will be a game night on Friday, March 10th at 7pm. The next regular group meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 21st at 7pm. We meet at the Affinity offices, 2850 S. Wabash Ave., Suite 108. Light snacks and beverages are provided by members for the monthly meetings.

For additional information you can reach out to this group by emailing midstreamers@affinity95.org or visit the Affinity Community Services website at affinity95.org.
